Details: Wood-engraving by Pablo Picasso on cream Marais wove paper for Vollard's projected edition of Hélène chez Archimède by André Suarès, illustrated with wood-engravings by Georges Aubert (1886-1961) after drawings by Pablo Picasso. Vollard abandoned this edition, but not before issuing the current print in a separate edition as a tipped-in plate in the specialist typographical journal Arts et Métiers Graphiques, each issue of which included a number of tipped-in plates on various papers. A quarter of a century later, the book was eventually published in an edition of 240 copies by the Nouveau Cercle Parisien du Livre. This plate is therefore something of a rarity; it is also the most attractive of Picasso's Cubist illustrations for this work, and is reproduced on p. 96 of Nicholas Rauch, Les Peintres et le Livre.
